LUOTAAMATON ALUE
THE UNSURVEYED AREA
NURMES ISLAND
FINLAND
THE UNSURVEYED AREA is an independent cultural event taking place in the Bothian Sea National park, archipelago of Rauma and on web. The event has been organized since 2015.
From 2015 to 2020, an open call was organised for The Unsurveyed Area. As the world closed in 2020, distances vanished through remote connections. From 2021 to 2023, the Unsurveyed Area invited artists from around the world under the theme "COMMITMENT TO THE PLACE." In the summer of 2021, images from the shores of oceans, rivers and lakes were printed on translucent large canvases and became part of the landscape in Old Rauma. Later, as smaller images, they became a year-round part of the constructed archipelago landscape at Päiväranta farm.
Traversing Nurmes – After a group exploration around the archipelgo, each artist was invited to choose a site for their for Luotaamaton Alue project. I chose a solo two-night stay on Nurmes Island The work I produced arose directly from the environment, from being alone, from a sense of the sublime, from the temporary isolation and the uniqueness of place. I stayed in traditional Finnish wooden dwelling with a small sauna building stocked with wood, a chicken coop offering a generous supply of eggs and an old bicycle
My approach unfolded into disitnct but connected strands– art and science. He scientific exploration focused on the island’s ecology: collecting from different points around the shoreline and searching for diatoms under a microscope (including striking blue ones). The microscope was kindly provided by Satakunta University of Applied Sciences (SAMK). This research feeds into the wider development of environmental project in Finland and UK. –
Alongside this spontaneous experiments emerged in the creation of site-specific artworks, poems, text, mapping and photography. Found and bought materials were used to form small interventions that responded to the natural elemn=nts - the light, the wind and the quiet presence of the island itself,
